Pantothenic acid belongs to the group of B vitamins and was discovered in 1931 as a substance that promotes the growth of yeast. Thereafter, similar effects were demonstrated in lactic acid bacteria and some animals. This is how this vitamin got its name, pantothen means in Greek: everywhere.

Pantothenic acid is relatively unstable, soluble in water and alcohol, and sensitive to heat. Somewhat more stable forms include the calcium and sodium salts of pantothenic acid (Ca and Na pantothenate) and panthenol, an alcohol. In food, pantothenic acid is usually not found free, but in a bound form. It must therefore be gradually released in the body. It is transported to the tissues and cells via the blood and the lymphatic system; there are no larger stores in the body.
