The original home of the evening primrose is North America. It was not until the early 17th century that it came to Europe as an ornamental plant, where it was first grown in kitchen gardens, as the roots of the plant are edible. Evening primrose oil is extracted from the seeds and contains linoleic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid and gamma linolenic acid (GLA).
