Selenium is a trace element and is responsible for the normal functioning of the immune system and the thyroid gland in the body. Selenium yeast also helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Natural sources of selenium are meat, fish, eggs, lentils and nuts. A lack of selenium can lead to hair loss or even dysfunction of the thyroid or the immune system.

According to the EU Health Claims Regulation, the following statements are permissible for selenium:
