DL-phenylalanine (DLPA) is one of the essential amino acids, which means that the body cannot (re)build it itself or synthesize it from other amino acids.

DL-phenylalanine transmits signals between nerve cells and the brain. DL-phenylalanine is a combination of L-phenylalanine, the natural form in protein-rich foods, and D-phenylalanine, the purely artificial form. DL-Phenylalanine is one of the main building blocks for the neurotransmitters responsible for alertness, a positive mood and pain control.

In the body, DL-phenylalanine is converted to norepinephrine and dopamine. Both substances promote mental mobility and vitality. Since DL-phenylalanine is mainly found in animal food, vegetarians often suffer from a deficiency.
