Like artemisinin, the derivative artesunate unfolds its cell-destroying effect through the chemical reaction with iron. This chemical reaction produces so-called reactive oxygen species, also known as free oxygen radicals. Since, for example, there is a high concentration of iron in the malaria pathogen, a chemical reaction occurs with the help of artesunate, a derivative of artemisinin, through which free oxygen radicals are generated. These attack the cell membrane and lead to cell death of unwanted cells.
