Niacin Deficiency Symptoms
Niacin deficiency is characterized by the so-called 3-D symptoms: dermatitis (abnormal skin changes), diarrhea (more than 3 emptyings of a stool that is too liquid per day) and dementia (mental deterioration, "dumbing down"). Niacin deficiency leads to appetite and weight loss, malaise and insomnia as well as dizzy spells, ultimately to pellagra (disease caused by vitamin B3; sharply demarcated, edematous dermatitis). A partial atrophy (atrophy of tissue) of the intestinal mucosa is the cause of the diarrhea and the main cause of the neuropsychiatric changes is considered to be a lack of serotonin in the brain. In developing countries, the most common causes of pellagra are protein deficiency and an unbalanced diet with corn or sorghum. Pellagra symptoms are usually caused by alcoholism or certain diseases, such as the hereditary Hartn up disease or increased consumption of tryptophan for serotonin synthesis. However, the nicotinic acid metabolism can also be disturbed by various drugs at different points and thus cause a niacin deficiency.
Niacin plays a particularly important role in supplying the body with energy, as it is involved in protein metabolism as well as fat and carbohydrate metabolism. In addition, niacin is important for our body's recovery. It is particularly important for the regeneration of muscles, nerves, DNA and skin. In addition, niacin promotes the formation of messenger substances in the brain, with the help of which information is transported from nerve cell to nerve cell. Finally, niacin is also important for a regular digestion process.
